Islands and islanders are known to be unique and these 225 islands clustered together on the British Columbia coast do in fact boast a special way of life. Most of the islands are tiny and visited only by private boat. However, the 6 big islands of Saltspring, Mayne, Saturna, Gabriola, Pender, Galiano, and Pender have populations well served by ferries and float planes. So you can get on and off the islands easily but…the pace is so relaxing and the sights, sounds, and tastes so engaging that once “on”, one is hesitant to get off. As a year around home, the Gulf Islands have become a retirement destination for some, and a weekend sanctuary for others.
